Description
Tabriz are fine rugs, densely knotted with very short wool pile sometimes with silk highlights with some Tabriz rugs having pure silk warps and fringes. Their pattern is dominated by a medallion in the middle with ‘fish tails’ one above and one below the central medallion, whose surroundings are densely decorated with repeating even floral motifs filling the whole rug. Many are in tonal browns, navy, reds and beiges but can sometime be found in other colours.
Often classified as city rugs rather than tribal, these beautifully patterned rugs are made in Tabriz which is one of Iran’s oldest rug weaving centres. Tabriz is situated to the North of Iran East of Azarbaijan Province. It is close to both Russian and Turkish borders with much of the population descended from Turkish migrants who still commonly speak Turkish rather than Farsi language.
